“Blessed Are the Peacemakers”: A Christian Warning Against War with Iran

As tensions escalate in the Middle East and reports emerge that former President Donald Trump has approved U.S. attack plans on Iran—but has delayed giving the final command—we find ourselves at a spiritual crossroads. (Wall Street Journal, June 2025). The path before us is not merely political or military; it is deeply moral, and for Christians, it is profoundly spiritual. It is in this moment that the voice of faith must speak loudly, clearly, and urgently: war must not be our answer.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.”

A Dangerous Path Toward Destruction

According to reports (Wall Street Journal; Times of Israel), Trump has “privately approved” detailed military plans to strike Iran’s underground nuclear facilities, including the heavily fortified Fordow site. While he has not yet issued the final order, he told the press he could make that decision “one second before it’s due.” This hesitation may suggest a moment of reflection—but it also raises the terrifying possibility that a single decision by a single man could ignite a massive war.

Israel has already conducted extensive military actions inside Iran, striking over 1,100 targets (Reuters, June 13, 2025). Iran responded with missile attacks and drone strikes, killing civilians and targeting hospitals. The drumbeat of war is growing louder, and America stands on the precipice of full involvement.

What Would Jesus Say?

No Christian should take war lightly. It is not just political leaders who must answer for bloodshed, but all of us who support or remain silent in the face of it. War is not merely a geopolitical strategy; it is a moral and spiritual failure.

“Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.”

Jesus rejected violence even in defense. As His followers, can we support a pre-emptive strike that would almost certainly ignite a regional war, kill thousands—possibly millions—and provoke devastating retaliations from Iran and its allies? Would Christ bless such a path?

The Consequences: Global and Spiritual

If the United States proceeds with an attack on Iran, it will not only provoke direct Iranian retaliation, but also drag in multiple actors: Hezbollah, the Houthis, Shiite militias in Iraq and Syria, and even global powers like Russia and China. The Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, could be closed, causing a global economic crisis.

This is not mere speculation—it is the blueprint for a regional war with global implications. Some have already begun to ask: Is this the beginning of World War III?

“They have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.” — Hosea 8:7

If we as a nation choose to sow war, we will reap its whirlwind—not only in lives lost, but in the moral degradation of our soul. As Christians, we must speak now or be complicit later.

The Call to Righteous Action

It is easy to be swept up in patriotic fervor or the illusion of righteousness through power. But that is not the way of Christ.

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21

Overcoming evil with bombs, missiles, and destruction is not the way of the cross. Instead, we are called to overcome evil with justice, mercy, truth, and—most radically—with love.

This does not mean we turn a blind eye to Iran’s actions. The Iranian regime is guilty of violence, persecution, and manipulation. But the way of Christ is not to answer darkness with deeper darkness.

Instead, let us urge diplomacy. Let us pray for our leaders to seek wisdom, not revenge. Let us push for international oversight, disarmament talks, and humanitarian engagement.

What Must Christians Do?

We must:

Pray for peace in the Middle East and for all nations involved (1 Timothy 2:1–2)

Advocate for diplomacy over war (Romans 14:19)

Speak boldly in our churches, communities, and on social platforms

Call on our leaders to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly (Micah 6:8)

 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray... and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 

— 2 Chronicles 7:14

There is still time to turn away from war. There is still time to choose a higher path. But the hour is late.

Let us remember: Jesus did not call us to be conquerors of men, but fishers of men. Let us not trade the eternal Kingdom of God for the fleeting kingdoms of violence.

War is not our destiny. Peace is our calling.
