Can Trump Really Arrest Governor Newsom?

So, here we go again—Donald Trump is in the headlines, this time for saying he might have California Governor Gavin Newsom arrested. Yep, you read that right. Arrested. It all sounds wild, like something out of a movie, but it’s very real and very serious. So let’s break down what’s happening, why Trump said it, whether it’s even legal, and what it tells us about the way Trump thinks—and what kind of danger that could mean for the country.

This all started when Trump sent federal immigration agents (ICE) into Los Angeles to start rounding people up in massive raids. A lot of folks were outraged—people protested in the streets, and California’s Governor Gavin Newsom basically said, “Not in my state.” He made it clear California wasn’t going to help ICE and that the federal government was crossing a line.


That’s when Trump cranked it up. He decided to send the California National Guard (which usually answers to the governor) and even brought in Marines without asking Newsom’s permission. Total power move. Newsom sued, and a judge actually blocked the deployment, saying it was unconstitutional.


Now, enter Trump’s favorite tough-guy sidekick, Tom Homan—his “border czar.” Homan suggested that if state officials got in the way of immigration enforcement, they could be arrested. Trump saw that and ran with it. He posted online that if Homan didn’t do it, he would. And just like that, Trump was threatening to arrest the governor of California.


Can Trump Actually Do That? Short answer: Nope. The president can’t just go around arresting people, not even governors. That’s not how the U.S. legal system works. If someone breaks a federal law, then it’s up to the Department of Justice to investigate and press charges, and then you need a judge, a warrant, and all that good stuff that’s part of due process—you know, what the Constitution says we’re all entitled to.


Even if Newsom did something illegal (which he didn’t), Trump couldn’t just throw him in jail like some kind of king. There are laws in place to stop exactly that kind of abuse of power. It’s called checks and balances. Without it, we’re just a dictatorship.


Why Did Trump Say It? Honestly? It’s all about the show. Trump has always liked playing the tough guy and loves picking fights, especially with big blue states like California. Threatening to arrest Newsom plays great with his base, who see Newsom as the poster child for “liberal elites.” But just because it fires people up doesn’t mean it’s legal—or sane.


Some say Trump’s comments are just more political theater, meant to distract from other issues or to make himself look strong. But when a former president threatens to arrest a sitting governor, it’s not just some offhand comment. It’s serious. And dangerous.


Is Trump Mentally Unstable? Well, I’m not a doctor, so I can’t officially say he’s mentally ill. But his behavior does raise red flags. Threatening political opponents with jail time, trying to use the military for domestic law enforcement, and showing no respect for the rule of law? That’s not normal presidential behavior. That’s something you’d expect in an authoritarian regime—not a democracy.


Governor Newsom himself said the threat was “an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism,” and he’s not wrong. Even comedians like Seth Meyers pointed out how Trump’s whole vibe is more about power and spectacle than anything to do with justice or law and order.


This isn’t just some political drama between two guys who don’t like each other. It’s about what kind of country we want to live in. Do we want leaders who follow the rules, or ones who think they’re above the law? If Trump can threaten to jail a governor just because they disagree, what’s stopping someone else from doing worse?


It’s up to us—voters, citizens, everyday people—to call this stuff out when we see it. Democracy only works if we protect it.
