Flashpoint in South Park: ICE’s San Diego Restaurant Raid

 On May 30, 2025, a popular Italian restaurant in San Diego’s South Park neighborhood, Buona Forchetta, became the unexpected epicenter of a national political controversy. Around 4:30 PM, roughly thirty armed and masked agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), backed by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), descended on the eatery. Staff members were handcuffed, the kitchen was emptied, and at least three undocumented workers were detained. To local patrons and witnesses, it looked more like a military operation than a workplace enforcement action. But for those familiar with the direction of the second Trump administration, the raid fit a disturbing pattern: a return to aggressive, high-profile immigration enforcement targeting not only borders but everyday American communities.

The justification for the raid dated back to a tip received in 2020, alleging that the restaurant’s owner, Matteo Cattaneo, knowingly employed undocumented workers—some allegedly with fake green cards. A federal warrant, signed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Crawford, authorized the sweeping operation, which many have since criticized for its broadness and severity. As part of the action, all employees were detained regardless of their immigration status, raising serious concerns about due process and racial profiling. Eyewitnesses reported ICE using flash-bang grenades and smoke devices to disperse bystanders protesting the detentions.


This was not just about one restaurant. It was about strategy. According to several sources, the raid was directly linked to policy directives from inside the Trump administration. Former senior advisor Stephen Miller, a well-known hardliner on immigration, had reportedly pushed for ICE to detain as many as 3,000 undocumented people per day, demanding rapid, large-scale enforcement in public-facing locations like restaurants, farms, schools, and courthouses. This was part of a broader campaign to fulfill Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations in his second term—a promise rooted more in political theater than logistical feasibility.


Local and national backlash followed quickly. San Diego’s Mayor Todd Gloria and Congressman Juan Vargas both condemned the raid, calling it an overreach of federal power that disrupted community trust and endangered innocent workers. Activists described the action as an act of intimidation—an intentional reminder that under the current administration, no immigrant community is off-limits. Protesters gathered outside the restaurant in the following days, leaving flowers and signs to show solidarity with the workers and the business.


Trump’s defenders argue that enforcing immigration law is necessary for national security and economic integrity. Yet critics say raids like the one at Buona Forchetta reflect something darker: an authoritarian approach to governance that targets vulnerable populations for political gain. Rather than addressing immigration reform through legislative channels, the administration appears to be leaning into fear, spectacle, and force. In that context, the raid in San Diego wasn’t just a law enforcement action—it was a message.
