Is Trump Acting Like a King? And What That Means for Us

 Let’s be real—Donald Trump hasn’t come right out and said, “I’m your king.” But lately, he’s been acting like one and even joking (or maybe not joking?) about it. Back in early 2025, after he shut down New York’s traffic pricing plan, he posted on Truth Social, “LONG LIVE THE KING!” That wasn’t just a one-off. His official social media accounts even shared fake TIME magazine covers of him wearing a crown. That’s not something a U.S. president—especially one who’s supposed to follow the Constitution—should be doing.


Trump’s not just being dramatic. These kinds of statements point to how he sees himself: not as a servant of the people, but as someone who’s above the rules. That’s scary. America isn’t a monarchy. We’re a democracy. Our presidents don’t get to do whatever they want just because they think it’ll look cool on Instagram. But Trump seems to think he’s untouchable.


Experts have warned about this for a while. Psychologists have said he shows signs of extreme narcissism, like believing he’s smarter, stronger, and more important than everyone else. Some even say he acts like a “solipsist”—which means he only sees his own point of view and thinks everyone else should too. Others point to signs of cognitive decline, like repeating himself or rambling during speeches. Add that to his king-like behavior, and you get someone who thinks he’s above the law, even though he's supposed to follow it just like the rest of us.


What does this mean for the country? It’s not good. If Trump sees himself as a king, then he’s not interested in checks and balances, the Constitution, or the limits on presidential power. And that’s exactly what we’ve been seeing. He’s been promising mass deportations, sending federal troops into cities without permission, and ignoring court rulings he doesn’t like. That’s not leadership—that’s dictatorship.


But here’s the good news: Americans are already pushing back. Across the country, protests under the banner “No Kings” have popped up. Thousands of people are standing up and saying, “We didn’t elect a king—we elected a president.” States like California are suing over his use of the military, and journalists, activists, and even some politicians are calling out his power grabs.


So how do we fight this? First, vote. Seriously—vote in every election, not just for president. Second, get involved locally. Join groups that protect civil rights and fight for democracy. Third, speak up. The more people talk about this, the harder it is for Trump to pretend everything’s normal.


At the end of the day, the Constitution starts with “We the People.” That means we have the power—and the responsibility—to protect it.
