Is Trump trying to be a dictator?

 On June 8, 2025, Donald Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard troops into Los Angeles without state approval, using federal authority under Title 10. This move, combined with his aggressive rhetoric—calling to "liberate" L.A. from a “migrant invasion" and using phrases like “They spit, we hit”—sparked criticism from California officials. Governor Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass condemned the deployment as illegal and inflammatory. Critics, including Senator Brian Schatz, warned that these actions resembled those of a dictator.


Legally, while the president can federalize the National Guard, doing so without state consent is rare and controversial. Trump did not invoke the Insurrection Act, but the bypassing of local control and militarized response alarmed many.


Though not proof of dictatorship in a strict sense, the combination of unilateral military action, confrontational language, and disregard for local authority raised serious concerns about authoritarian tendencies.
