“No Kings” in Kansas: When Small Towns Roar with the Nation

Something kind of amazing happened in Manhattan, Kansas last week—and I’m not talking about New York. On June 14, over 1,200 people gathered at City Park holding signs, chanting, and making it crystal clear: they’re done being quiet. The protest was part of something called “No King’s Day”, and it wasn’t just a local thing. It was everywhere. Cities big and small across the U.S. saw millions of Americans hit the streets to say, “We don’t want a king, we want a democracy."

Here’s what went down locally: KMAN News covered the Manhattan event, noting how much it’s grown—just two months ago they had maybe 350 people. Now it’s well over a thousand. One of the organizers, Amber Starling, put it perfectly. She said people are tired. Tired of losing jobs, tired of closures, tired of policies that seem to help the powerful while hurting everyone else. And what pushed it all over the edge? Trump’s massive, taxpayer-funded military parade on his birthday. Seriously. While he celebrated with tanks and flyovers, people were out here saying, “This is not what America is supposed to be."

And the Manhattan crowd wasn’t alone. This was part of a nationwide wave of “No Kings” protests, with between 4 and 6 million people showing up in over 2,000 cities.
