“The Nations Rage”: A Christian Warning on the Iran Crisis and the Panic of Putin and Xi

In these perilous times, the world is once again standing on the edge of war. The growing crisis in the Middle East—specifically the escalating tensions between Israel, Iran, and the United States—is causing panic not only among Western observers, but among global powers like Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping. Their unease is not simply about geopolitics; it is about the potential unraveling of a global order they have sought to manipulate for their own gain. As Christians, we must look deeper—not just into the news cycle but into the Word of God—to understand the spiritual and moral gravity of these events.

Global Powers in Distress

This past week, Putin and Xi issued urgent warnings following Israel's major strikes against Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure. Putin cautioned that a strike on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant could unleash a “Chernobyl-style catastrophe” (Reuters, June 19, 2025). Xi called for restraint and blamed Israel’s aggression for the instability, offering China’s support in mediating peace. These leaders are not driven by compassion or justice, but by fear: fear that a full-scale war would destroy their strategic alliance with Iran, upend global oil markets, and unleash chaos they cannot control.

Yet these two men—both authoritarian leaders with deep records of Christian persecution in their own countries—now seek to style themselves as "peacemakers." This is a false peace, warned of in Scripture: “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them…” (1 Thessalonians 5:3). Their goal is not the peace of God but the preservation of power. They fear that if Iran collapses, so too will the anti-Western axis they have nurtured in opposition to American and biblical values.

The Battle Behind the Battle

This crisis is more than geopolitical—it is spiritual. Iran has long been hostile to both Israel and Christianity, and it has weaponized religion to support terror and tyranny. Yet the solution is not war for war’s sake. The true enemy is not flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12), but the spiritual forces that stir hatred and violence between nations. When world leaders scramble to secure their empires—while ignoring justice, truth, and righteousness—they set themselves against the very foundations of God’s law.

Putin and Xi’s “panic” over Iran is not rooted in concern for peace but in the fear that their plans will be thwarted by divine intervention or Western response. As Christians, we must be careful not to align ourselves with global empires that despise the Gospel while pretending to uphold peace. The words of the prophets ring clearly: “Say unto them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence…” (Isaiah 35:4).

A Christian Call to Action

The role of the Church in this hour is not to cheer for war or to idolize any nation—including our own—but to stand for truth, justice, and the Gospel. We must pray for peace (1 Timothy 2:1–2), speak out against the deceptions of false peace (Jeremiah 6:14), and support efforts that uphold the dignity of all human life. Let us remember that Christ is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), and His Kingdom is not built with missiles and treaties but with righteousness, grace, and truth.

If war does break out, we must care for the refugee, protect the innocent, and rebuke the spirit of empire that seeks domination at any cost. And we must never be deceived by tyrants who use the language of peace to cover their own sins. Putin and Xi may panic—but their fear will not stop God’s justice. For in the end, “The Lord shall be King over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and His name one.” (Zechariah 14:9)

Let us not be deceived by earthly powers or paralyzed by fear. The Lord remains sovereign. As Christ Himself said, “See that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6).
