Trump Carried Through on His Threat — Arresting Peaceful Protesters

 Trump held a massive military parade in Washington, D.C. on June 14, 2025 — celebrating the Army’s 250th anniversary and, notably, his 79th birthday . Anticipating backlash, Trump publicly warned that anyone protesting would be met with “great force” .

Elderly Veterans Arrested for Peaceful Protest

On the night before the parade, a group of about 75 demonstrators — many veterans and some in their 80s — peacefully rallied outside the Supreme Court. Around 60 of them then moved toward the Capitol, where Capitol Police, citing policy, blocked them with bike-rack barriers. After breaching the line, several veterans crossing a perimeter were arrested — including an 87‑year‑old man using a walker . One notable guy, John Spitzberg, reportedly quipped after being released: “I’m just beginning, my friend” .

It’s hard to even imagine arresting elderly veterans for peacefully protesting. These were service members who once defended constitutional rights — and now they were locked up for exercising them.

 Why This Violates the First Amendment

The First Amendment says you have the right to “peaceably assemble.” That's government-speak for “yes, you have the right to protest — even if it makes them uncomfortable.” Arresting people who are not hurting anyone, but are peacefully standing their ground? That’s the textbook definition of suppression.

Unless protesters are engaging in violence or blocking safety routes, law enforcement is supposed to escort them or facilitate their protest — not arrest them. The question is: did crossing a police line really justify that? Or was this a show of force?

Paradox of Parade vs. Veterans' Needs

Trump’s parade reportedly cost taxpayers between $45–50 million . Meanwhile, those same protesters argued publicly — and rightly — that funding should’ve gone toward veteran care, healthcare, education, housing… you name it .

It begs the question: Why spend enormous sums to glorify a parade and deploy troops when the people who actually deserve support (the veterans themselves) are crying out for help?

Shameful? You Bet.

Let’s be clear: arresting elderly veterans for standing up — against Trump's “dictator fantasies,” as one protest organizer put it — is a disgrace.

These are warriors who risked their lives so we could protest dictators and defend democracy. Now, they're being treated like criminals for the same.

Final Thought

This isn’t about politics — it’s about principles. Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracy. Shutting it down, especially when it’s done respectfully — and with Force — is chilling. And when it’s done to silence veterans, it’s downright shameful.
