Trump, Kristi Noem, and the New Hardline Tone at Homeland Security

Ever since Donald Trump came back into power and appointed Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security, the tone of the entire department has shifted big time. If you’ve noticed things feel more aggressive, more escalated—you’re not imagining it. This is by design.

Mass Deportations Are Back—and Bigger

One of the first big moves? Trump ordered ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to start ramping up deportations again—fast. The goal is around 3,000 people a day, mostly in Democrat-led cities like L.A., Chicago, and New York. The kicker? ICE is already facing a $1 billion budget shortfall, and they’re still pushing forward with this massive crackdown.

This isn't about focusing on dangerous criminals either—many of the arrests are targeting folks with no criminal record at all.

Militarized Responses Are Making a Comeback

Remember 2020 and the George Floyd protests? Trump hasn’t forgotten. He’s bringing that same kind of playbook back. When immigration protests broke out recently, he sent in the National Guard and even talked about using the Insurrection Act to send in the military if needed. Yep, he actually said that out loud.

Thousands of troops, Marines, riot gear—the whole nine yards. Peaceful protests got treated like a battlefield.

Kristi Noem’s “Tough on Immigration” Agenda

Then there’s Kristi Noem. Since taking over DHS in January 2025, she’s wasted no time making her mark. She’s rolled back Biden-era policies, launched ads telling undocumented immigrants to “self-deport,” and increased detention capacity like it’s a competition.

She also massively expanded ICE, hiring tens of thousands of new agents and pushing for a much more visible, forceful presence across the country.

Things Boiled Over in L.A.

One of the clearest examples of this new tone happened just days ago in Los Angeles. DHS was holding a press conference on these immigration raids, and California Senator Alex Padilla—yes, a sitting U.S. Senator—showed up and tried to speak out.

He was forcibly removed.

Like, handcuffs and all.

That moment made it clear to a lot of people: this isn’t just about immigration policy anymore. This is about raw power. And critics are saying this new direction feels dangerously authoritarian.

So What’s the Big Picture?

Put simply, Trump and Noem have turned DHS into something a lot more aggressive. The department’s tone now is all about force, raids, fear, and control. Whether you agree with their goals or not, the way they're going about it is raising serious concerns—especially when civil liberties and public accountability are on the line.
