A Deadly Mistake: The EPA's Asbestos Rollback Is a Moral Crime

The Trump-era Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under new leadership, has announced it will reconsider the ban on chrysotile asbestos—the last form of asbestos still legal in the United States. This decision is not just misguided; it is dangerous, immoral, and deeply irresponsible.

Asbestos is a known carcinogen. Exposure causes mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other deadly diseases. Over 40,000 Americans die each year from asbestos-related illnesses. Yet the EPA, pushed by industry lobbyists and chemical manufacturers, wants to review whether certain “risk-based” protections are enough—rather than maintaining a full ban. This is a betrayal of public trust.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t about science or safety—it’s about profit. The same industries that fought for decades to keep asbestos on the market are now inside the very agency meant to protect us. The same people who once downplayed the risks are now in charge of assessing them. And while over 50 countries have fully banned asbestos, the U.S. is entertaining a rollback.

This is not just bad policy. It is a moral failure. God’s Word warns against leaders who trade truth for lies and put lives at risk for personal gain. “Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set” (Proverbs 22:28). The asbestos ban was one such landmark—won through pain, sickness, and death. To reverse it now is to spit in the face of the suffering that made it necessary.

Americans must not stay silent. Public health leaders, pastors, voters—everyone—must speak out. If we do not, the rollback of asbestos regulation will be only the beginning. We must demand an EPA that defends life, not endangers it.

Let this serve as a warning. The blood of future victims will be on the hands of those who opened this door. And on the hands of those who said nothing while it happened.
