Dangerous Lies: Noem, Trump, and the Canadian Border Myth

Kristi Noem, who’s running Homeland Security now thanks to Donald Trump, recently started making some wild claims about Canada. She said Canada’s basically a crime-ridden mess and that dangerous gangs are sneaking into the U.S. from up north. Sounds crazy, right? Well, former Canadian MP Charlie Angus called it exactly what it is—total nonsense and just another example of the “MAGA hysteria” that’s all about scaring people instead of telling the truth.

This isn’t just someone being clueless about Canada. It’s part of a bigger problem with how Trump and his people do things: they’d rather spread panic and drama than focus on real solutions.

Noem’s been going around warning that the U.S. needs to treat the Canadian border like it’s some kind of crime hot spot, just like the southern border. But the facts don’t back that up at all. There’s no spike in gang activity crossing the northern border. In fact, it’s known as one of the safest borders in the world. Even people who live near it and reporters covering it say Noem’s talking points are more political show than reality. Angus pointed out that Canada is being unfairly painted as a threat, and it’s just a twisted story for political gain.

And let’s be real—Noem didn’t just come out of nowhere. Trump picked her for this DHS job, and she got confirmed early this year. Her style is basically a copy of Trump’s: lots of flashy appearances, dramatic statements, and putting on a show instead of focusing on the real work. That kind of behavior isn’t leadership—it’s grandstanding. And it’s dangerous because it stokes fear, divides people, and hurts the trust we should have in our government and even with our closest neighbor, Canada.

What’s worse is that all this fear-mongering actually distracts from real problems. There are real issues at borders—like dealing with organized crime or the hardships migrants face—but when leaders focus on made-up threats, those real issues get ignored. Plus, insulting Canada like this messes up a key relationship and fuels division right here at home. Some Canadians have even said they don’t want to visit a country that’s acting like this. That tells you how damaging these claims really are.

At the end of the day, Noem’s warnings about Canada aren’t based on facts. They show how far things have gone off the rails with Trump’s crowd—more about hype and fear than truth and responsibility. This kind of reckless talk does real harm to America’s reputation, both politically and diplomatically.

If we want real leadership, it’s time to say enough with the fear games and start demanding honest, fact-based conversations about our borders—north and south.
