When Leverage Becomes Coercion
Donald Trump just proposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports—orange juice, coffee, beef, and more. But it’s not about protecting U.S. jobs or fixing trade. It’s about pressuring Brazil to stop prosecuting Trump’s political ally, former president Jair Bolsonaro.
That’s right. The U.S. actually has a trade surplus with Brazil, so this isn’t an economic move—it’s political. Trump is using tariffs as a threat: “Back off Bolsonaro, or your economy takes the hit.”
Legally, this is on shaky ground. Trump’s team is leaning on emergency powers meant for real threats—like terrorism—not personal political favors. Courts have already pushed back in similar cases. In V.O.S. Selections v. Trump, a federal court blocked tariffs Trump tried to impose using the same legal reasoning.
This kind of behavior raises serious questions. Is it just bad policy, or could it be an abuse of power? Maybe even grounds for impeachment? Using government tools to protect a friend abroad isn’t just unusual—it’s dangerous.
