Kicking the Can to Kill Medicaid: How Trump’s “Beautiful Bill” Is a Time Bomb for Millions

Christians are called to defend the vulnerable. That means standing up for the sick, poor, and marginalized—not allowing political power to be used for personal gain. Yet in crafting the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” Donald Trump and his allies have stacked the deck for themselves and the wealthy, while deliberately delaying massive Medicaid cuts until after the 2026 midterm elections. This isn’t just politics—it’s profiteering.

Trump’s presidency—and now his return—has been marked by self-enrichment. He refused to place assets in a blind trust, continues to earn from his properties, and has benefited from tax laws he helped craft. Independent outlets such as FactCheck.org, The Washington Post, and The New York Times have all reported that Trump stands to save millions in taxes thanks to prior and new GOP tax cuts, especially from pass-through deductions—some of the very policies included in this bill.

The new law carries an estimated $4.5 trillion in tax breaks, with nearly three-quarters favoring the top 20% of earners. At the same time, Medicaid and SNAP cuts totaling over $1 trillion are structured to begin after the 2026 midterms. That timing is no coincidence—it’s a political calculation meant to protect the bill’s authors from immediate accountability while leaving someone else, likely Democrats, to take the blame when the consequences hit.

Medicaid isn’t a handout. It’s a life-saving program for over 80 million Americans—working families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities. Gutting it while boosting corporate tax breaks and shielding billionaire donors is not just bad policy—it’s unbiblical. Proverbs 31:9 commands us: “Speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.”

The Catholic Health Association and the Sisters of St. Agnes have both spoken out forcefully against this bill. They warn that millions will lose care due to work requirements, frequent eligibility checks, and the rollback of pandemic-era protections. The Sisters even warn that tens of thousands of Catholic nuns in elder care may be impacted. Their message is clear: this is about human dignity, not budget lines.

Jesus taught us to care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40). Delaying cuts until after an election to avoid criticism is a deliberate betrayal of that teaching. Christians should not support any leader who turns away from compassion for political convenience or personal enrichment.

The law’s supporters are trying to make sure the consequences land on someone else’s watch. But Christian ethics say we must face truth head-on. We must speak up for those without a voice. Millions are counting on the Church to act—not with slogans or blind loyalty, but with justice and mercy.

Now is the time to pray, to act, to speak, and to vote as people of faith. Delaying justice is still injustice. And defending the vulnerable must never wait.
