Trump’s War on Mail-In Voting Isn’t About Fraud — It’s About Power


Donald Trump’s crusade against mail-in ballots has nothing to do with protecting the integrity of elections — it’s about protecting his own political power.

Trump and his allies argue that absentee and vote-by-mail systems are riddled with fraud. He has even floated the idea of banning them outright by executive order. Yet decades of studies, audits, and investigations across Republican and Democratic states alike have found no widespread evidence of mail-in ballot fraud. What we see instead is a strategy to tilt the playing field.

Mail-in voting tends to be used more often by Democrats, urban residents, younger voters, and communities of color. Limiting or eliminating this option disproportionately hurts those groups. It’s no coincidence, then, that Trump continues to hammer away at the practice. In the same way Republicans have leaned on redistricting and restrictive ID laws, attacking vote-by-mail is a way to suppress certain blocs of voters and strengthen GOP chances at the polls.

The former president has also tied his stance to executive overreach. At one point, Trump claimed he had the power to end mail-in voting by order from the White House — an assertion flatly at odds with the Constitution, which places election authority in the hands of states and Congress.

The damage doesn’t stop there. Trump has used the U.S. Postal Service as a political pawn, withholding or threatening to withhold funding at a time when millions of Americans depend on reliable mail delivery not only for ballots but also for medicine, bills, and critical communication. Undermining the infrastructure that supports voting is a direct attack on democratic participation.

Global echoes make this even more alarming. Trump has pointed to Vladimir Putin’s support for ending U.S. mail-in voting, suggesting alignment with authoritarian leaders who benefit from shrinking democratic freedoms rather than expanding them.

This isn’t about fraud. It’s about shaping an electoral battlefield where fewer Americans get to vote and one side of the political spectrum stands to gain. Mail-in voting is safe, secure, and essential — especially in a democracy that claims to value accessibility and participation. Trump’s effort to kill it is nothing less than an attempt to weaken democracy itself.
