Charlie Kirk’s Death and the Choice Before Us



The tragic death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University has sent shockwaves through the nation. Kirk, known for founding Turning Point USA (TPUSA) and aligning closely with former President Donald Trump, was shot during a public event. Authorities have arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who allegedly harbored anti-Kirk sentiments and acted alone in the assassination (The Guardian).

Kirk's death has brought to light the deep divisions in our country—divisions fueled by populism, nationalism, and ideologies that prioritize power over unity. This moment offers us an opportunity to confront these issues and work toward healing.

Kirk was a prominent figure in conservative circles, known for founding TPUSA in 2012. The organization aimed to promote conservative values among young people, particularly on college campuses. While TPUSA provided a platform for students to engage with conservative ideas, it also faced criticism. Some viewed its methods as divisive, focusing on ideological purity rather than fostering constructive dialogue.

In his later years, Kirk became associated with Turning Point Faith, an initiative that sought to integrate Christian values into political activism. This approach led to discussions about Christian nationalism—a belief that the United States is fundamentally a Christian nation and that its policies should reflect Christian principles. Critics argue that this conflates faith with politics, potentially marginalizing those who don't share the same beliefs. As Rev. As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I've always admired the show's message of cooperation and understanding across differences. Star Trek taught me that diversity is a strength and that dialogue—not division—leads to progress. This perspective is crucial as we navigate the challenges facing our country today.

In the aftermath of Kirk's death, there has been a surge in interest in TPUSA, with thousands of students expressing a desire to start new chapters. This response underscores the influence Kirk had and the need for spaces where young people can engage with political ideas. However, it's essential that these spaces promote respectful dialogue and understanding, rather than deepening divisions.

This attention can shine a light on the bigger problems our country is facing—problems caused by division, populism, and nationalism. It gives us an opportunity to pause, reflect, and come together. We can talk openly, work toward healing, and focus on unity instead of letting anger and division continue to drive us apart.

As Christians, we are called to be peacemakers, to love our neighbors, and to treat everyone with dignity—no matter their political beliefs. True faith calls us to unite, respect one another, and stand up for justice and truth without using fear or anger as tools. Violence, hate, and extreme ideologies are signs of a society that’s broken, and we can’t fix it unless we reject those messages and focus on what really matters: love, peace, and understanding.

At the end of the day, Charlie Kirk's life and death remind us of the high stakes when division overtakes dialogue. While he tried to help and had some good intentions, his strong alignment with divisive ideas shows how easily even well-meaning people can contribute to a fractured society. His death is tragic, and it’s a wake-up call for all of us to live out our faith in a way that brings people together, not tears them apart. Let’s honor his memory by being peacemakers, loving our neighbors, and striving for unity in our communities.
