Trump’s “Patriotic” Civics Curriculum Is a Trojan Horse for MAGA Indoctrination

The Trump administration is moving quickly to reshape what America’s children learn in school — and if you’ve been paying attention, the plan should alarm you. Behind the banners of “patriotic education” and “founding principles,” the White House and the Department of Education are orchestrating a coordinated effort to tilt civics and history teaching toward a MAGA worldview.

Just recently, the Department of Education announced a new America 250 Civics Education Coalition. On paper, it’s about instilling love of country and knowledge of civic duty. In practice, it’s being run by the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) and stacked with dozens of conservative groups deeply tied to Trump’s political machine. That should set off alarm bells for anyone who still believes public education should serve students — not political parties. [1]

Look at who’s been invited to the table: Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, PragerU, Moms for Liberty, the Heritage Foundation, Alliance Defending Freedom, First Liberty Institute, Catholic Vote, Concerned Women for America, the Texas Public Policy Foundation, the American Center for Law & Justice — just to name a few. These aren’t neutral civic-education organizations. They are some of the most powerful, outspoken, and partisan players in the conservative movement, now officially working with the federal government to shape classroom content. [1][2]

The administration has also redirected millions in federal funding to support “patriotic civics” programs and dangled grant money in front of schools willing to adopt approved materials. [5] Pair this with Executive Order 14190, which bans K-12 schools from teaching so-called “radical” or “anti-American” ideas — including anything that smacks of gender identity discussions or honest conversations about systemic racism — and the agenda becomes clear: reward schools that echo MAGA talking points, punish those that don’t. Make no mistake, this isn’t just a culture-war skirmish. It’s an attempt to rewrite the narrative of America’s past and present, cutting out uncomfortable truths in favor of propaganda. Our students deserve to grapple with the complexity of U.S. history — the triumphs and the failures — not a cherry-picked fairy tale meant to serve one man’s political movement.

Even more troubling, the federal government is legally barred from controlling local school curricula. [4] That hasn’t stopped Trump’s team from looking for ways around those limits — using “partnerships,” grant incentives, and executive orders to strong-arm schools into compliance. [5][6]

This is not patriotism. True patriotism means confronting history honestly, teaching students to think critically, and preparing them to participate in a democracy that values liberty and justice for all. What Trump is pushing is something else entirely — a top-down, government-endorsed indoctrination campaign masquerading as civics education.

Parents, teachers, and communities must pay attention. Once these ideas are embedded into textbooks and lesson plans, it becomes much harder to undo the damage. The stakes are nothing less than the future of how our children understand democracy itself.

We should all be wary of any administration that tries to use our schools as political factories. America doesn’t need a MAGA curriculum. It needs an honest, balanced, and inclusive education that prepares the next generation not to worship a movement, but to safeguard a democracy.
