Let’s be honest: President Trump’s obsession with tariffs has done more harm than good. Domestic manufacturers might benefit slightly, but think about all the other businesses that rely on these materials. From construction companies to car makers, these higher costs get passed on directly to consumers. You end up paying more at the store and businesses struggle to stay competitive internationally.

Trade wars might sound flashy in the news, but history is crystal clear on the risks. Back in the 1930s, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff hiked import taxes to “protect” American jobs. The result? Other countries slapped retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, exports collapsed, and the Great Depression worsened. Fast forward to today, and economists warn that reckless tariffs create the same problems: supply chain disruptions, inflation, and weaker global influence.

Even Trump’s own allies have felt the pain. Countries like Canada, Mexico, and China retaliated, slapping tariffs on U.S. goods. Farmers have been particularly hard-hit: soybeans, pork, and other exports took a massive hit, forcing bailouts and leaving rural communities scrambling. Meanwhile, American consumers are footing the bill with higher prices for everyday goods.

In short, Trump’s tariff tantrums are a classic case of short-term political theater at the expense of long-term economic stability. The American people aren’t just losing out financially—they’re losing influence in global trade and credibility with allies. Protectionism may sound patriotic, but history shows that when it’s done recklessly, it’s anything but.
