Trump Is Driving Our Best Military Leaders Out

It’s happening, and it’s alarming. Some of our most experienced, seasoned military leaders are walking away—and Donald Trump’s recent actions are the reason.

Marine Colonel Doug Krugman, after 24 years of service, resigned in September 2025. Why? Pardoning January 6 insurrectionists, leaving Afghan allies behind, and deploying the National Guard without proper oversight—all moves he said undermined the Constitution and his oath¹.

He’s not alone. Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield was removed from her NATO role, and Rear Admiral Jim McPherson warned about political loyalty outweighing merit in military appointments². Admiral Alvin Holsey retired amid controversy over Caribbean operations³. Even Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman left after testifying in Trump’s first impeachment⁴.

These aren’t minor personnel moves—they’re some of the best minds in the military. And they’re leaving because they can no longer serve without compromising their ethics, judgment, or the Constitution.

Trump may spin this as strong leadership, but the exodus tells a different story. When our top officers resign or retire en masse, national security is weakened. Integrity, expertise, and moral courage are walking out the door.

If we value a strong, principled military, we cannot ignore the cost of political interference at the top. Our leaders are leaving not for paychecks, not for comfort—they’re leaving because Trump’s actions make it impossible to serve without betraying their oath. And that’s a crisis every American should see coming.
