Trump Is Letting Our Children Go Hungry

LI am furious. Absolutely furious. In 2025, millions of Americans — including some of the most vulnerable among us, our children — are facing hunger, not because of bad luck or natural disaster, but because the Trump administration is choosing not to act.

Nearly 40 percent of SNAP recipients are children¹. These are kids who rely on school lunches, after-school meals, and their families’ SNAP benefits to survive. And now, thanks to this administration, many of them could go without food because the government refuses to release $5 billion in emergency SNAP funds² that sit right there, unused.

The USDA claims that this contingency fund is not legally available to cover regular SNAP benefits during a government shutdown³. They argue it’s only for “emergencies” such as natural disasters, not for funding gaps caused by a political stalemate. Officials also say even if they used it, they couldn’t distribute benefits in time to cover the month, and diverting the funds might harm other nutrition programs⁴. And politically, the administration is treating the funding gap as leverage, forcing Congress to act under pressure instead of using available resources to feed children immediately⁵.

This is not just bureaucratic incompetence. This is a deliberate, political choice to let children go hungry. States are suing, arguing the law and prior USDA planning documents allow the contingency fund to maintain benefits in a funding gap⁶. But while the courts deliberate, children, seniors, and working families are left to suffer because of political gamesmanship.

And it gets worse. The Trump administration has cancelled the annual Household Food Security Report⁷, the government’s primary measure of food insecurity. Without it, we lose transparency on hunger in America. The administration claims the survey is “redundant, politicized, and inaccurate,” but critics warn that cancelling it at a time of rising hunger is tantamount to turning off the lights while people starve⁸.

Let’s be clear: the money exists, the mechanisms exist, and the need is urgent. Yet the administration refuses to act. Children, seniors, and working families are left at risk because political priorities are being placed above basic human needs.

The Bible speaks plainly about this kind of neglect:

> “He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.” (Proverbs 21:13)

This is not about budgets or bureaucratic red tape. This is about human lives. The faces of SNAP are children, seniors, and families who are praying, hoping, and working — and now they face empty shelves because of political cowardice.

Feeding America’s children should never be optional. Refusing to do so is moral failure at the highest level. And every citizen who values decency, morality, and the future of this country should be outraged.
