Trump’s Columbus Delusion

Donald Trump just called Christopher Columbus “the original American hero.”¹ Let that sink in. Columbus never set foot on what became the United States, never met an American, and couldn’t have imagined a nation that wouldn’t exist for nearly 300 years after his death. Calling him an “American hero” is pure fantasy — history rewritten to fit a political story.

Trump piles on the praise, calling Columbus a “giant of Western civilization” and full of “faith, courage, perseverance, and virtue.”² The reality? Columbus’s voyages unleashed slavery, violence, and disease that wiped out millions of Indigenous people across the Caribbean.³ That’s not heroism. That’s one of history’s darkest chapters.

And Trump ignores the voices of those who suffered. He doesn’t acknowledge Indigenous peoples or the fact that many cities and states now celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day.⁴

He frames critics as part of a “left-wing campaign to erase history.”⁵ Wrong. Americans aren’t erasing history — they’re correcting it. They’re rejecting the idea that conquest and exploitation are heroic.

The irony is rich: Columbus sailed for Spain, never reached North America, and died believing he’d found a route to Asia.⁶ If that’s Trump’s idea of a hero, it tells you more about him than about Columbus.

Trump’s proclamation isn’t about history. It’s about politics. Patriotism built on myths isn’t pride; it’s denial. True heroes are those who face reality, make sacrifices, and build a better world. If Trump wants to honor bravery, he should start with the Indigenous peoples who survived and continue to fight for their cultures.⁷

Trump isn’t defending history — he’s twisting it. And if he really believes Columbus was an “American hero,” he’s out of his mind.
