Allowed by God Is Not Anointed by God: Why Fruit Fails the Christian Test

I am a Christian, and I am born again. But being born again does not require me to treat any politician like “the chosen man of God.” I have been accused of not being a Christian because I have criticized Donald Trump, who some people claim is a chosen man of God. He definitely is not.

Yes, God can allow rulers to rise. Romans 13 teaches that governing authorities exist under God’s sovereignty. But “allowed by God” is not the same thing as “personally chosen as a righteous man of God.” God also allowed Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, and Pilate to hold power. That did not make them godly men.

And judging fruit is not hatred. Jesus Himself said, “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). Christians are commanded to test, discern, and refuse idolatry. Praying for a leader is biblical. Worshiping, excusing, or blindly defending a leader is not.

Trump’s fruit includes many things that are not Christian.
1. First, he has repeatedly mocked, insulted, and degraded people instead of showing the humility of Christ. The Bible says, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth” (Ephesians 4:29), and Jesus taught His followers to be meek, merciful, and pure in heart.

2. Second, he boasted about sexual immorality in the Access Hollywood recording, later issuing an apology after the tape became public. That is not Christian fruit. Scripture calls believers to sexual purity, self-control, and respect for women, not boasting about degrading them.

3. Third, he was found civilly liable for sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll and for defamation. A jury awarded Carroll $5 million, and a later jury awarded her an additional $83.3 million in a defamation case. That is serious fruit, and Christians should not pretend it does not matter.

4. Fourth, he has promoted revenge and retaliation against his enemies. Jesus taught, “Love your enemies” and “Bless them that curse you” (Matthew 5:44). A spirit of revenge is not the spirit of Christ.

5. Fifth, his administration’s family separation policy harmed migrant families. Scripture repeatedly commands compassion toward strangers, foreigners, children, widows, orphans, and the vulnerable. Separating children from parents as a policy of deterrence is not Christian fruit.

6. Sixth, he used a Bible and a church setting for a political photo opportunity after protesters near Lafayette Square were forcefully cleared. Even if people debate the exact motives behind the clearing, using Scripture as political imagery is not the same thing as honoring the Word of God.

7. Seventh, he was impeached twice, including after the January 6 attack on the Capitol. The House charged him with “incitement of insurrection.” Christians should care about truth, peace, lawful order, and the damage caused when a leader’s words inflame chaos.

So yes, I will pray for Donald Trump. I will pray for any president. Scripture commands Christians to pray for those in authority. But praying for a leader does not mean pretending his fruit is righteous. It does not mean calling evil good. It does not mean treating a politician like he is above biblical correction.

My loyalty is to Jesus Christ, not Donald Trump, not a political party, and not a movement. If Trump does something right, I can acknowledge it. But when his actions contradict the teachings of Christ, I will not call that Christian fruit.

So no, I do not hate him. I refuse to worship him. There is a difference.
