Don't Let Politics Replace the Truth

To those who believe President Trump was God's answer to America's problems, I'd simply ask that we apply the same standard to every president and stick to the facts instead of political talking points.

President Obama never said America was "no longer a Christian nation." What he actually said was that America is not just a Christian nation but also a nation of people from many other faiths and those with no faith—a reflection of the First Amendment and America's religious diversity, not a denial of Christianity. He also never ordered that "all bathrooms be genderless." His administration issued guidance concerning transgender students in public schools, which is very different from what some people are are claiming. The idea that he "apologized for America" comes from a political slogan, not from an actual apology speech. And while Obama acknowledged that some manufacturing jobs would not return because of automation, he never said America should simply give up on jobs returning. 

If we're going to judge presidents honestly, then we also have to acknowledge the controversies surrounding Donald Trump since returning to office in 2025. His administration has issued a record number of executive orders, expanded presidential power, imposed sweeping tariffs that critics argue have increased costs for consumers, carried out aggressive immigration enforcement that has sparked legal challenges, and granted pardons to more than 1,500 people connected to January 6. Many of his actions have been challenged in court, and some have been blocked or delayed by judges. 

Christians should also be careful about claiming that "God gave us Donald Trump." God is sovereign over history (Daniel 2:21; Romans 13:1), but Scripture never teaches that every leader God allows to rule has His approval. God also allowed Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, and even Caesar to rule. Some served God's purposes while acting wickedly. The Bible tells us to pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2), respect governing authorities, and hold everyone—including our favorite politicians—to the same standard of truth and justice.

Ultimately, my hope isn't in Donald Trump, Barack Obama, or any other politician. Psalm 146:3 says, "Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save." As Christians, our loyalty belongs first to Jesus Christ. We should support good policies wherever we find them, oppose bad ones wherever we find them, and refuse to excuse falsehoods simply because they come from someone we voted for. Truth should matter more than party loyalty (Ephesians 4:25).
